We had a great time at YAPC::NA -- it really was an incredibly useful conference -- and we'd like to extend the offer for conference registration to anybody for whom it's more convenient to attend YAPC::EU, which is being held in Frankfurt, August 20-22.
If you have submitted at least five patches to us (since the DW project began) and at least one patch in the last year, you qualify. (YES. YOU. I DON'T CARE IF YOU THINK YOU HAVEN'T DONE ENOUGH. IF YOU MEET THOSE CRITERIA, YOU HAVE DONE ENOUGH. HIT THAT IMPOSTOR SYNDROME OVER THE HEAD, RIGHT NOW, AND GO SIGN UP. Ahem.)
pauamma did me the favor of contacting the conference organizers to see how they wanted to handle third party registration, and the answer is: create an account and register for the conference, indicating that your registration will be paid by the small business that is sending you, then send me an email with the name under which you registered and we'll handle payment with the conference organizers.
The small print: We reserve the right to put a cap on the number of attendees we send. (We're thinking a limit of 20 people total; this may be adjusted based on interest.) We cannot, unfortunately, pay any of your travel costs or hotel costs, but the conference wiki contains information about lower-cost lodging options and has room-sharing options. If you almost qualify but not quite, you can have until the end of July to get your patches in. Patches in the review queue that have not yet been committed do qualify.
To repeat, I REALLY MEAN IT ON THE IMPOSTOR SYNDROME THING. (I'd put that in blinking text if people wouldn't kill me for it!) YAPC::NA was full of talks that were useful for people at all skill levels -- I'm certainly no Perl guru and I got tons of useful stuff out of attending, and it actually benefits us considerably to have people from Dreamwidth participating in conferences: the more presence we have in the open source world, the more we're likely to attract people from other projects with skills we need.
Even if you're just starting out, check out the in-progress list of talks, and if you see anything at all you think you might benefit from, please do consider attending. (For instance, Refactoring Perl Code by
szabgab, who has contributed awesomeness to us before, looks highly applicable to anybody working on DW! And there are always a ton of talks on things that don't look applicable on the surface, but contain really interesting things -- if I were going, I'd be super interested in stuff like State of the Velociraptor, because it looks like it will cover a ton of stuff I don't already know that might be useful. I also always make it a point to attend at least one "this is completely over my head, oh my god!" talk whenever I'm at a conference: I learn well by having interesting people who really care about what they're talking about tell me useful things, so even if I'm lost 80% of the time, the other 20% might contain something really awesome.)
And, of course, thank you to everyone who has paid for their accounts lately, which is what makes it possible for us to have the budget to be able to do this. :)
