What does the file manager need before rolling out?
Hi all!
I've just had a quick chat with
mark following yet another support request about a GUI for the photo hosting system which does actually exist but is pretty bare-bones and currently undocumented.
Mark is comfortable that with a few UI tweaks it could be added to the main menu (Organize --> Manage files, or similar) in order to be discoverable.
The big thing is "have the HTML for embedding an image provided anywhere other than immediately after uploading it". At this stage adding more features/functionality is not on the cards (unless you're volunteering!), but in the spirit of doing a relatively quick UI polish, is there anything else you'd like to see?
I'll be filing an issue in a week's time, and hopefully we can get UI tweaks out in the next code push...

It would be nice to have a navigation route to ~/file/ ("Your Files") from ~/file/new/ ("Upload Images") without using the back button. Also guidance on what types of image files are permissible, and max size, if any.

If the date that something was uploaded is exposed anywhere, that would be very helpful to show.
Paginate; if you've put a lot of things in there (oops) /file/edit is amazingly unwieldy. I imagine this will save bandwidth. (It's basically unusable for me at the moment.)
My personal preference would be to have page 1 be the first images uploaded, and the last page be the most recent, and have the default landing be on the most recent (whatever number that is), but I could hear arguments otherwise. My main reasoning here is that lacking an *actual* view-files-by-date feature, the combination of a displayed upload date and a stable-ish pagination scheme that will put the oldest things consistently on page 1 and go from there, can be used roughly as though it were an actual by-date index, and people will get used to where their stuff is.
The embed information is of course key.
It should also be possible to edit the image description after the fact, as well as when it's first uploaded.

Feel free to ping me on any larger feature requests - I'm still working on the /customize UI stuff, but I like that kind of work.

In the ideal world, I would not need to change generated code. It's even OK if i can see it only once.
Any of following would be highly appreciated.
* UI to control preview size. On adding image form, maximum preview width and maximum preview height parameters with proper default values would be sufficient.
* Automatic adding width and height attributes and using original image instead of preview
* Just show the size (width * height ) and size on disk of original file

Any kind of success message (You've successfully uploaded x images) or loading bar. I use drag and drop to upload pics and, at first, thought I had to add descriptions for them to be saved.
On /file/edit it says 'Here are all the files you've uploaded from mobile.'. Well, not necessarily mobile.
Friendly error messages. I've just gotten these on on /file/edit and /file/new:
Unable to instantiate file in MogileFS. at /home/dw/production/cgi-bin/DW/Controller/API/Media.pm line 71 on /file/new
[Error: Column 'height' cannot be null at /home/dw/production/cgi-bin/DW/Media.pm line 62. @ va-web04]
[Error: Unable to instantiate resized file in MogileFS. at /home/dw/production/cgi-bin/DW/Media.pm line 62. @ va-web04]
I have no idea what they mean. :)
Display pics in a grid instead of a list? Just a thought. I think sorting options will have to be added at some point too. And the ability to rename pics.

Everything else has been noted - thank you :-)

If not tags, perhaps some sort of folder / directory UI?

Edit: maybe also ditch the "from mobile" part now that's we're supporting uploads via the web site and not just via email.
