April-May Old Bugs Hackathon

It's time for our next hackathon! The suggestions hackathon did really well in getting people inspired to clear out some older stuff, so I thought, what about clearing out some really old stuff?

From now until May 30, patching a bug with a Bugzilla ID number under 2000 (so, 1-1999) will earn 10 DW points if it's effort-minor, 50 if it's effort-medium, and 100 if it's effort-major. Patching a bug with a three-digit or less Bugzilla ID (1-999) will carry a 50% points bonus (so, 15 for effort-minor, 75 effort-medium, 150 effort-major).

I know a lot of the older bugs are huge epic things (major projects we logged up front), but many of them are smaller fixes! There's even a codemerge or two. Check out the unassigned bugs and see if there's an older bug you can give some love to.

I'm kind of new to this, so I'm curious as to how it works, what skills are needed, etc?

Different bugs need all kinds of different skills! Mostly perl, but some HTML, CSS, Javascript, etc. There's projects of every skill range, from "help I have no idea what I'm doing" to "I am a perl guru". The Getting Started wiki category explains how to get started in DW dev, especially Dev Getting Started and Dreamhack Getting Started (Dreamhacks are our free hosted development environments.) Fair warning - you'll start with one bug. Then you'll go for another. Before long, you'll be bug-whacking like nobody's business.

^_^ Before I start, I need to get familiar with the code. I'm only skilled with HTML & CSS right now.

If you want, I can go find a suitable baby bug and step you through it and mentor you. After all, you're mentoring in my styles class!

Are you able to make Bugzilla accounts using your dreamwidth email?

Sure, you can use whatever email address works for you!

Also, we ask that you add your username in brackets with a colon in front of it under your "Real Name" in the Account Information tab, like so:

Denise Paolucci [:denise]

Other than that, put in whatever you want in that field.

Aha. I tried using my dreamwidth email to register and it gave me an error. It says to pass it on to mark. Should I toss it that way, post it, send it somewhere else?

I tried with another email and it worked fine, though it's not really the email I'd want to use.

And will do with the username.

Huh. It shouldn't be a problem -- there doesn't seem to be anything in the configs that prevent people from using a dw address -- but I'll look into it some more. In the meantime, what about a gmail address that forwards to your preferred email?

huh. that's a really weird error message. I'll poke at it a bit more when I get the chance!

Known issue -- never got around to fixing it. Since the dreamwidth.org emails only forward to other accounts anyway, I usually just tell people to use another email. If you really are worried about security you can create a dummy throwaway account on gmail or whatever and just set the forwarding there.

I looked into it once, it wasn't obvious, so I never finished digging into it and fixing it.
