My dev resolution: work on getting rid of BML

So, I'm going to try and post the current status of that project every month. I certainly don't think I can finish that project (at least not on my own!) but I am going to make a good dent in it.

ooh, ooh! I want mentoring!

One of my new years' resolutions last year was to contribute code to Dw, and, um. Didn't happen. I got as far as getting a dreamhack set up, but honestly I haven't the first clue how to navigate it.

But this year, it is totally going to happen. I've been working my way through the Perl book, and with a little hand-holding I think I can tackle a babydev bug if someone can walk me through updating my dreamhack and show me how to use it.

I offer bribes in the form of baked goods, candy, or yarn.

Do you have the login info and have you ever logged into it? If so, we can take it from there, otherwise it is time to start from the very beginning and get you set up!

Yes, I have login information and have logged in! I had to get Sophie to reset it for me a while ago, but now it's working!

Should I just follow the update instructions on the wiki? It looks like I also need to upgrade to data version 9.

You may find the command line tutorial on the wiki to be helpful, if you need to know generally how to navigate using a command line!

I've actually found a way to navigate it using the GUI on my ubuntu laptop--I can accesss my Dreamhack without ever touching command line. Which is probably super lazy on my part, but I'm ok with that.

I just haven't gotten farther than going "my, what a big file tree you have."

Fair enough, although you will need to use the command line occasionally; there's currently no other way to start and stop your Dreamhack. But you might already know that, so. :)

It's probably also going to be easier to make patches on the 'hack machine itself, but you could do it locally if you wanted too. :)

Yes, I'm trying to re-familiarize myself with the command line for that stuff (also there are some things that are just plain faster to do in terminal, I imagine). I just used it to reinstall my hack.

If I access, edit, and save files through the GUI, it only changes locally? It looks on my end like it's changing on the 'hack, but I could be on crack about that. (One of the permissions problems I was having was that it was telling me I didn't have write privileges to my hack when I tried to save a file I'd edited through the GUI).

I apologize for all the newbie questions; I really have not the first clue what I'm doing.
