My last class for my Master's in Women and Gender Studies is Inequality and New Media. For my final project, I wanted to take a look at Dreamwidth. In the presentation [staff profile] denise and [staff profile] mark made at LCA, they said that 75% of their coders are women. I'm curious about what factors lead to the increased participation of women in coding, particularly open source projects, where women are historically under-represented. Dreamwidth has been so successful in this way. I'm hoping to use interview data to get at why that may be.

I love to speak with anyone (male, female, or any of the other gender flavors) who has done any coding whatsoever for Dreamwidth. Whatever you tell me will be kept confidential. I'll be using pseudonyms in my final paper, and your identity will not be revealed. You can email me at karenwolf@gmail.com. I'm looking to do interviews largely over IRC, at some mutually convenient time.

Denise knows I'm working on this project, and has generally ok'd my writing about Dreamwidth, but neither she nor Mark (nor anyone else) are responsible for anything I say/do/write.

I may also use information in public posts, but I WILL NOT be mining any private data (locked posts, #dw, stuff like that) for this project.

Please feel free to signal boost this... This is crossposted from http://marcelle42.dreamwidth.org/525931.html.
