Are there API docs anywhere? I have done slightly more than a perusal, but less than a dig, and have not stumbled across it. I am just interested in the 'create post' endpoint so I can stitch image hosting and DW posting into one action. Thank you!

https://github.com/dreamwidth/dreamwidth/tree/main/api but I'm not sure there's image posting in it yet. If all you want is image upload and posting, and you can live with the restriction on image location in email posting described in https://www.dreamwidth.org/support/faqbrowse?faqid=248 , I would suggest using that feature.
