Real-time development coordination -- on Discord!

Hi all!

In the deep dark ages past we used IRC as the means for doing real-time development/volunteer communication. This worked well enough for years but as a medium there are a lot of limitations to IRC and most Dreamwidth staff haven't been active there for a long time (for various reasons).

Some time ago we created a Discord community and have been using it for some real-time communications since. It has proven to be effective for our purpose so we're going to make it official. If you would like to have a place to go to ask questions, talk about development, and similar Dreamwidth related conversation, you can find us here:

https://discord.gg/dreamwidth

If you do decide to join us, when you join you'll only be able to see much at the beginning. Just tell us what your Dreamwidth name is in the #introductions channel and as soon as staff is around we can get you the right access to see the rest of the channels!

I want to emphasize that this is just for volunteer/development communication and isn't meant to be a social lounge. IRC is still a reasonable place to go for that if you just want to hang out and chat, but we won't be using Discord for that.

Questions & comments, fire away!

I've been considering learning to code so I can help with things, especially creating a mobile site, but I haven't started yet. Am I welcome to join despite that, or should I wait?

Unofficially, yes, generally very welcome and people will help you learn. There are also ways you can help without coding, such as answering Support requests.

n00b question: how do multiple identities and privacy work on Discord? Like many people, I'd prefer my wallet-name open source contributions not to be officially linked to my fannish pseud.

Discord allows you to set different names on different servers, but some servers can disable that option, and Dreamwidth has done. I think if you add someone as your friend, they see your "master" name rather than the name for the server you share, but I'm not certain on that part.

Thank you for the info. I would have to maintain completely separate accounts, then, and use different browsers to access them. Do you know if there's a rule against doing that?

In order to do this I use multiple instances of Chrome and create a new user name and password for Discord. Then Discord can be opened in the secondary instance of Chrome and signed into the secondary account.
