We'd like to participate in the Google Summer of Code, or at least submit a proposal to be accepted as a mentoring organization. What things do you guys think would be good candidates to put on our suggested projects page?

For instance:

* memories/bookmarks overhaul
* scheduled/draft posts
* GUI-izing the config/install process
* revamping the community maintainership model to Not Suck(tm)
* ...

Ideas?

EDIT: LJ's old Summer of Code page

Hmm... I'd also propose a lot of projects that are going to be pretty closely tied to someone who's learning about Computer Science. I don't have any ideas right off the bat, but something that exercises algorithms and similar science stuff.

Trust metrics, six degrees, "relatedness", various other calculable things we could potentially do.

Security audits! Try to figure out ways the system can be exploited so we can fix them.

OAuth. Making sure other protocols like XML-RPC, Atom, RSS, etc, are used well and fully up to date. Implementing OpenID stuff like SREG so we can start automatically passing around info like email addresses and suggested nicknames for people using their DW OpenID on other services. Looking and seeing if there's anything useful to have about OpenSocial.

well XML-RPC (and flat) isn't us using someone elses protocol (like Atom and Blogger are) , its our own protocol -- XML-RPC is a *type* of protocol

Replacing BML with Template Toolkit like [staff profile] mark's heart desires.

Writing us a client that doesn't suck. Nice self-contained project which doesn't need knowledge of all the idiosyncrasies of our code, and can be done in any language.
