weekly dev chat meetings

For a while now I've been kicking around the idea of scheduling a regular time once a week or so to meet in #dreamwidth-dev and chat about what's going on with Dreamwidth development - what we're doing, what we want to be doing, what we might be stuck on, etc. We've tried this once before, but it's been a couple of years and I want to make the effort to get this going again. I personally would be more motivated to work on code if I were checking in with the other members of the development team more frequently, and I expect I'm not the only one!

This is how I propose we start:

  • First meeting on Saturday, June 21, at 12 noon EDT
  • Second meeting on Friday, June 27, at 10 pm EDT (this is the last evening of OSB)
  • Third meeting on Saturday, July 5, at 12 noon EDT
  • Fourth meeting on Friday, July 11, at 10 pm EDT

Subsequent meetings will follow this alternating pattern for at least the first few months, after which we can evaluate and decide if we need to shift things around. Having a meeting scheduled every weekend may seem like a bit much, but I expect that by having a regular staggered schedule, hopefully those who can't make one time work for them can attend the alternate one, or drop in as time permits. This setup will also allow us to avoid the hassle of having to figure out a new scheduling consensus for every meeting.

Other points of interest:

  • I'm not doing this alone! [personal profile] foxfirefey has agreed to share hosting duties so that if something comes up for one of us, the other can be responsible for guiding the meeting. Also, it would be very helpful to have other experienced devs on hand to offer advice and/or mentorship to those who might be struggling.
  • I would like to post meeting logs to [site community profile] dw_dev for the benefit of those who are not able to attend but are interested in the proceedings.
  • We don't want to exclude anyone! If you're reading this and not already familiar with our IRC channels, check out the IRC help page on our wiki, keeping in mind we'll be chatting in #dreamwidth-dev, not #dreamwidth. If you can't be on IRC, you can always ask questions in comments as well.

I hope you'll be able to join us!

To make log-posting from IRC meetings easier, I suggest checking out MeetBot: https://wiki.debian.org/MeetBot I love it. Example notes from one meeting.

It's also worth noting that the channel topic will need to reflect that logging is happening, and probably also link to the logs afterwards, once they are posted.

You have op access so you should be able to change the topic via ChanServ?

PS I'll try to make as many of these as I can!

Excellent idea! I can't make the first two, but I'll try to be there on the 5th July.

Is it okay to lurk the channel in general if I'm interested in DW development?

Yes, though I imagine it would be boring in that case!

...why would the dw-dev channel be boring if I'm interested in dw dev? Am I missing something?

oh my gosh I AM SO SORRY, I somehow managed to read your comment as "not interested in DW development" ha, having actually read what you wrote it makes much more sense! Yes yes yes, come hang with us!

Carriage factory, yep. [personal profile] kareila and I moved back south in 2005 and now work on DW among other things.

I approve of this plan :-) And thank you for the alternating times. I'm not really involved in dw-dev any more, but I shall try to get to one of the ones that are not at 3 in the morning ;-)
