A little organization and updates!

Hi all!

I've been doing some poking around and realized that I don't have a good overall state-of-the-DW-development. I have some vague ideas about what some people are working on and interested in, but I wanted to make those vague ideas become a bit less vague. :)

If you have a few minutes, I'd appreciate you taking the time to answer a couple of quick questions here!

  1. Are you actively working on a bug (or several) right now? Which ones?
  2. What are you interested in working on -- broadly or narrowly, what do you want to do? (Or are you just open for suggestions?)
  3. Is there anything explicitly blocking you from doing what you want? (Knowledge, someone has the bug claimed for a year, need a hand with something, etc.)
  4. Free form! Anything you want to say or ask. :)

I also want us to have another development focused chat like we did some months ago. I think the last one I did was well timed for US developers but bad for EU, so I'll go the other way this time. I'm thinking something like 8AM Pacific which is midnight for [personal profile] fu and 4PM UTC on a Sunday. Reasonable?

Thanks!

I want to modernize the customize area so bad

with drag and drop modules and shit and changing all color properties that are X color to Y color at once and MAKING IT LESS TEDIOUS it would be fantastic

oh my god seriously i would love you foreeeeeeeeeever

the mobile site will totally give you enough frontend practice to get started on the customize area next after that, right? :D :D :D

Hmm, well, I don't know how much of the mobile site will directly translate, but I think with jQuery behind me, it's possible. I halfway did a cardsorting app in Django and jQuery once that had drag and drop, and I've done some simple "order by drag and drop" stuff for work in web interfaces, so I feel it is doable!

ooooh

I'm going to focus on what I'm currently signed up for but I will keep it in mind. I will feel better about having stuff on my plate when I finish up my customized-advanced to TT and editing other styles than the current one bugs, have dreamhacks working with GitHub whether I'm the main instrument or just an assistant, and making some actual real progress on the mobile site. Then I think I'll convert the customize area to TT (which should be easier than the advanced area, actually, less code since most of it is in widgets) and THEN I can do the drag and drop for it without feeling dirty doing so much in BML.

Like I mentioned in IRC, I also know a bit about the comment handling, and would be happy to help out with it in my copious free time. :)

If we're doing 11 AM Eastern then Saturdays would be the best for me, yes. Which isn't to say that I would be able to make a given Saturday at that time, just that I do have a conflict then every other day of the week. :)

for bug 210 -- would it help you (either motivation-wise or practicality-in-solving-implementation-problems wise) to schedule time for an interactive demonstration in irc or something? because i am SO DAMN EXCITED for the feature, omg, and i think a lot of other people are as well, and i would be thrilled to take an hour, listen to you show off bits and pieces of it, and gush over all the bits that make me SO DAMN EXCITED. and if there are, f'rex, particular frontendy bits you're flailing about or tiny implementation questions or whatever, it might be helpful to talk it out and get opinions and thoughts!

just SAY THE WORD and i will make it happen, seriously, i am SO DAMN EXCITED about this project. :)

for the record: we don't have a lot of bugs open for making the install process easier, mostly because i don't do installs and mark has done it so many times he can do it in his sleep, but if you spot anything that should be changed to make the process easier please file bugs for it. it's not one of those priorities that springs to my mind often (see also: i don't do installs) but any work we can do to make the process better is a good thing.

i saw you asking in irc scrollback earlier today, meanwhile, and yes, we would love better install instructions (for a standalone setup, i mean, not for dreamhack type stuff) in the wiki. if you don't have an account already, talk to [personal profile] foxfirefey (and i think a few other people can do it too but i'm blanking on names) -- they'll get you hooked up.

i'm so excited about 4504, you have no idea!

and yeah, i agree that the UI for the external sites tab is kind of a mishmash. one of these days we will lure somebody with design skillz! in the meantime, just do what you can. :)

also, just to say it again (since it's been a while) -- having people working on the huge features is awesome, don't get me wrong, but i also adoooooooore people hacking on the little bugs, especially stuff that comes up frequently in support. one of the things i love most about running dw is how we're getting to fix all the tiny little bugs that always drove me bugfuck while we were working on lj but couldn't really get approval for hack time for the tiny shit. there are a few major features we've added that i love to bits and pieces, but i think the sheer accumulated weight of all the little fixes is even more awesome (and definitely more immense), really. and i love being the kind of project where we care about the little shit.

you're totally right on needing more big-picture type stuff! i always keep intending to do that and i always keep getting distracted. i should do a "what we want to accomplish in 2013" post.

seconding [staff profile] mark, i'm so incredibly proud of our commitment to improving site accessibility wherever possible, and you're definitely one of the reasons we can do that. you are awesome for caring so much about it and i'm so glad we have you.

if i ever work out the bugs on that whole "uploading myself to the matrix" thing, i will be happy to lend you the technology so you can run multiple instances at once :)

Absolutely; will do! Actually, that's kinda how 4933 - Disused docbook docs still present came about -- I mentioned encountering the old docs in the dev channel, and Dre was like "OMG we still have those? O_o Can you please file a bug for that?"

Too, I've been tuning up minor discrepancies in the Scratch Installation wiki doc as I find them, but I'm happy to take that page and related ones and reshape them a bit more dramatically as I come to grok the process of installing and running the code a bit more completely. =)

b) As I discussed with fu on IRC a little while ago, I think it would be nice to have occasional posts from you guys outlining the big picture of where you see development going - what are the priorities at present, what's happening, and so forth. Things sometimes seem a little opaque. (this is intended as a suggestion rather than as a complaint!)

*nods* Oddly enough, I find it easier to know what some of my current fellow volunteers are working on but not so much what the 'fixed' part of DW is doing.
