Let us buy you stuff!
The past three months have seen a drastic increase in the number of paid accounts, which is awesome, and even with the increase in hosting costs associated with the increased traffic, we're still coming out ahead of the game. This means it's time for us to start investing in our developers, and that means you!
We'd like to buy you some reference materials. Books, lectures, professional society membership -- anything you've been eyeing and thinking "that would really help me learn something I can use to contribute to DW".
The fine print:
* You must have submitted at least 5 patches to DW in the past 12 months, and at least one of them must have been in the last 2 months. (Dev work is our pilot version of this program -- we'll work out equivalences for other forms of contribution if this goes well.)
* The reference materials must be related to DW in some way (so, like, nothing on Python or Ruby on Rails, for instance). They don't need to be related to something you've already done for DW, though (so, if you've been wanting to get more into UI design, but you haven't done any UI design work, you can order a book on UI.) They can be general or specific reference material (systems design, Template Toolkit books, accessibility reference material, Programming Perl, you name it). We reserve the right to ask you to order a different item.
* Offer is good for one book/reference/etc per year, up to a $100 value. (We're willing to make exceptions if you can make a good case for it, but that will have to be on a case-by-case basis.) We reserve the right to suspend or cancel this program at any point.
If you'd like to take us up on the offer:
* Email denise at dwscoalition.org from your Bugzilla email account (or, if from another email address, be sure to include your Bugzilla login) with the item you want. If it's a book, include the ISBN. If it's something else, include enough information for me to locate it.
* (If it's a physical item) Include the name it should be addressed to, and the address it should be sent to, along with any special ordering information or options.
* (Optional) Comment here with what you're ordering, or review it in your journal once it gets to you and drop a link in the comments, so others can have a sense of what people are getting and get ideas!

While it's not exactly the same, I'm reminded of my last full-time job. My first day, my boss said, "I don't know programming but I know how programmers are -- you need tools. Give me a list of what you need that we don't already have."
Tools. References. Resources. Yay!
I said that what you're doing doesn't affect me directly. But of course, as a DW user, it'll affect me indirectly. I'll probably never notice which bits work better or get implemented faster because of this, or who winds up doing more for DW because of a morale boost, but I'm dead certain these things will happen.

(And there's always browsing O'Reilly's Safari Books to see if any titles strike your fancy.)
Also, I just looked at the stats and you totally do qualify -- there are 10 bugs assigned to you that have been resolved and the most recent patch was submitted 1/29. So if there is something you want, pick it out and email me! Let us buy you something! Please!

(Side note: I think it really speaks to the quality of Dreamwidth that the percentage of accounts that are paid has stayed so steadily high even as the site has grown so much in the last few months - it's quite extraordinary.)

Every day. Every day something or someone on dreamwidth makes me smile, and think "that's awesome!" The way you conduct business is just awe inspiring.
You rock :D
