Ten major features wanted: a tour

I've had a few people ask me lately about which major features would be most helpful (for Dreamwidth) for them to work on, and I figured it would be a good idea to highlight some of the big projects we have planned and see if anybody wanted to pick them up!

For all of these: if you are interested in working on the project, don't feel like you have to do everything. We can find someone to do the frontend if you're interested in the backend, for instance, or find someone who's interested in doing design work if you aren't sure what the end-user-facing things might look like. If the project doesn't have a full spec, we can write one. Etc, etc, etc.

I would love to get at least one of these major projects completed by the end of the year, so if there's anything I can do to interest you in one of these projects, or if there's anything I can do to help you out with getting them done, just let me know. Our recent surge in user registration is a fabulous opportunity for us to show people how awesome DW really is and win their loyalty forever.

This post is not all of the major projects that are in Bugzilla, but they're the ten most wanted right now!

i. massively wanted
  1. Bug 35: Killfile support. This bug is for adding a function that would let someone not only ban a user, but "killfile" them, so they will never again see any comment, post, or reference to that user.

  2. Bug 210: Overhaul memories. This bug is to gut the existing memories function and replace it with a "social bookmarking" function, very similar to how Delicious works (only even better). If I had to point at a single project on this list for "most wanted" status, it would be this one. With Delicious transfering to new management, this is a major opportunity for us. Whoever implements this will earn a seed account, for their own account or for any account of their choice.

  3. Bug 3483: Pretty URLs. This bug is to allow people to define "slugs" for their entries that will appear in the URL, so for instance dw-dev.dreamwidth.org/12345.html would turn into dw-dev.dreamwidth.org/12345/ten-major-features-wanted-a-tour.html.

  4. ii. medium-wanted

  5. Bug 34: Index/archive pages for simple one-click website building. This bug is to add a system by which you can designate certain posts to appear on an archive page, with short descriptions, so you can create "best of" lists or a table of contents of your writing or whatever.

  6. Bug 2375: crosspost to Facebook.

  7. Bug 3578: crosspost to Tumblr

  8. iii. wanted

  9. Bug 32: export journal as .pdf. This bug is for creating .pdf export files such as those offered by LJ Book.

  10. Bug 270: implement pingback/trackback. This bug will notify the poster in some way when their entry is linked to from another site.

  11. Bug 272: close comments on post (after $time): This will let people "shut off" commenting on a post, leaving existing comments in place but not accepting further comments, with an option to do this automatically to all posts after a certain length of time has passed.

  12. Bug 2818: tag-based reading page. This bug is to let you filter your reading page by tag, so you can (for instance) only see posts tagged 'knitting' or only posts tagged 'fic' or whatever.
