Google Summer of Code projects

Auuugh, neither Mark nor I realized the deadline for GSOC was so close! (It's the 12th of March. Whups.)

We need ideas for things we would want someone to do -- largeish projects with lots of shiny that can be implemented fairly independently without a steep learning curve on the code. Mark's going to brainstorm his own list, but if anybody has any ideas, sound off!

I must admit, I'm not sure whether the idea of the GSOC works well for DW. While I understand that you have control over what gets in, I'm rather proud of the fact that all of our devs, bar none, actually use the site themselves.

I think it's something where you need to know the community before you know the code, and I would hate to see someone going in the other direction.

How about an interface to Facebook Connect, allowing users to log in with their Facebook credentials, users to add Facebook users to their access list, and/or users to selectively make (non-public) items viewable by their Facebook friends? A lot of people have friends who have no interest in keeping a journal online and are too busy to make Yet Another Social Network account, but would read one's posts if they could see them through their Facebook stream.

I'd love to see a calendar system implemented, much in the style of Google Calendars. It'd just be nice to keep all that important stuff in one place.

Also, slightly off topic - I'd love to see someone somewhere create a Dreamwidth iPhone app.

Hm, two things I'd like but they may be a bit too entwined in the current code:

* Better openid integration (more granular ability for the journal owner to decide whether openid is closer to anon or registered),some kind of JS-picker that lets them select the most common services, etc?)

* more granular community management privileges

Possibly too late for this, but the importer function that replaces the original LJ entry with a link to the DW imported entry, that would make people incredibly happy.
