The story of this project is a decade and a half of "this solution that was objectively correct and in some cases exceedingly ahead of its time back in 1999-2002 sure has come back around to bite us in the ass twenty years later", I swear! (My absolute favorite is when one of us is cursing the idiot who programmed it in the first place, looks up the code history, and realizes "fuck, I'm cursing out myself".)
