Haha, it's okay! I was definitely pleased that the template replacement worked with no muss no fuss.

Not a lot of pages will need this treatment, I think, so I think I can go with a hook for now to add the variables needed to the stuff getting passed into the template for this, and we can revisit it when the replace thing happens. Is there a bug open for the work you're talking about? Maybe we could open one just to record what the plan is!
