Fun fact: pick-up-and-drop is actually a time-honored chicken flock-bonding/courtship method. When a flock leader (usually a rooster or hen with chicks) discovers something delicious, they pick it up and drop it while making a distinctive repeated short clucking sound, like buk-buk-buk-buk-buk. The rest of the flock comes running over to see what that's all about. (Bukking with your beak full is considered poor form if it results in no treat left when everyone else shows up. It's also poor form to pick-up-and-drop a stick in the hopes that your hens will come over.)
