Code Tour, 26 Aug - 19 Sept

Ah, hello, Dreamwidth. It is I, the King of All Cosmos. We thought today would be a good day for code touring. Such amazing things! Today you will be rolling around the world. Behind the cut is an astonishing 67 wonderful bugs for you to roll up in your katamari. We can believe in you for 20 minutes in Earth time while you read, but any longer than that and even the King of All Cosmos can't be expected to wait.

Oh, yes, almost forgot! A royal present of all these new things for the hardworking Prince. That's what We were thinking. ♥ But then We forgot it while We were doing kingly things elsewhere. So none of these changes are live, yet, but once you're finished with your hard day's work, We will see about arranging for a code push this weekend.

We look forward to a nice katamari of code, little Prince. We'll leave you to your work now.

Frontend changes

Bug 2954: Comment and post wrapper poster-$USERNAME class should use ext-### form of OpenID username
Category: Style System
Patch by: [personal profile] dunvi
Description: Oh, what a wonderful fix. So elegant and delightful. This patch changes the CSS classes used around entries in your journal so that entries posted by OpenID users don't get a "username.example.com" class (since periods break CSS) but instead use the backend "ext_XXX" username for the class. It still isn't a perfect solution, since we've done a lot of work to make sure that you never have to know what that "ext_XXX" backend username is for OpenID accounts (and therefore it's harder for you to find it to be able to use it), but at least now the CSS won't break horribly.

Bug 4569: Properly credit layout and theme authors in the settings
Category: Style System
Patch by: [personal profile] momijizukamori
Description: Our theme and style designers are so ♥talented♥. We want to make sure they receive credit for their work. This is why We have made sure each theme has a module in it, showing who designed both the parent style and the color theme. However, 7 styles were set up so that only the color theme designer showed, overriding the parent style author. This fix corrects it so that Our loyal designers are properly credited.

Bug 4394: Minor CSS tweaks/bugfixes for Marginless
Category: Style System
Patch by: [personal profile] momijizukamori
Description: What is this? It can't be! The Marginless style had some display problems, like elements receiving incorrect padding and color variables being used in the wrong place. But ooooh, we fixed it.

Bug 4442: Add additional link color variables to Blanket
Category: Style System
Patch by: [personal profile] momijizukamori
Description: We like colors ♥ We like having colors in the customization wizard ♥ This patch adds several new groupings of link colors in the Blanket layout, so you don't have to find one link color that will work on the page itself, modules, entries, sidebars, etc. Now you will be able to define separate link colors for all of them to enhance your glorious designs ♥

Bug 4525: HTML 5 for site scheme
Category: Modernization
Patch by: [personal profile] deborah
Description: Oh, how lovely! How clever and useful ♥ This patch converts our site skins to using HTML5 and converts many aspects of the site to using HTML5 elements rather than <div> elements. There should be no visible changes, but it will mean better accessibility and the ability to use more elements of modern markup and scripting in the future.

Bug 4562: alphabetize other services on profile
Category: Misc UI/Frontend
Patch by: [personal profile] ninetyd
Description: We were naughty. So very very naughty. We allowed the list of accounts on other sites you can display on your profile to get out of order. Fortunately the hard-working [personal profile] ninetyd came along and cleaned up Our mess. They will now be shown in alphabetical order.

Bug 4561: tooltip on manage profile shows [[siteabbrev]]
Category: Misc Backend
Patch by: [personal profile] ninetyd
Description: How could We have allowed this to happen? The tooltip displayed when you hover over one of the settings in the Privacy section of Manage Profile showed a variable name instead of putting in the right value. Now it will display properly.

Bug 3812: Show sysban notes on closed anonymous spam reports
Category: Misc UI/Frontend
Patch by: [staff profile] denise
Description: Our antispam team is so lovely ♥ They work so hard at rolling up spammers ♥ This patch improves their admin tools to make it easier for them to keep track of spammers so they can unleash Our royal vengeance upon them ♥

Bug 4539: strange behavior of faqedit page when remote has 'faqadd' with no args and 'faqcat:*', 'faqedit:*'
Category: Misc UI/Frontend
Patch by: [staff profile] denise
Description: Oh, dear. We don't know how that could possibly have been allowed to happen. This patch fixes a minor issue with granting access to the admin FAQ-editing tools to make it work better in certain edge cases. We do not expect you to ever need to know this. Unless you are editing FAQs. Which you probably are not.

Bug 4491: do not silently truncate text fields when uploading or editing icons
Category: Icons
Suggested by: [personal profile] kate_nepveu
Patch by: [personal profile] dunvi
Description: This patch adds a much smarter description of what the limits on adding keywords to icons are. Someday We will be able to make this page all ♥shiny♥ and ♥smart♥ and show you a more useful counter of how many more characters you have left. But We felt this would do for now.

Bug 4544: Mood Themes: unhelpful error message when logged out
Category: Misc UI/Frontend
Patch by: [staff profile] denise
Description: We found a bug. It was a naughty, naughty bug. If you try to view individual mood themes when you're logged out, it gives you a completely unhelpful error. Since we're in the process of redoing that page as part of our ongoing conversion to a new templating system, and trying to fix the bug would've taken more than a few minutes, We just set the page to let logged-out people know they should log in to see it for now.

Bug 4598: Missing strings on /community/manage
Category: Communities
Patch by: [personal profile] fu
Description: This page is missing something! What is it? What could it be? Oh, We know. It is missing a bit of text. Mmmm, so texty and delicious.

Bug 4513: CAPTCHA issues with anonymous and OpenID comments
Category: Misc UI/Frontend
Patch by: [personal profile] swaldman
Description: Oh, how clever. How terribly, terribly clever. [personal profile] swaldman worked so diligently hard to find the cause of this bug. After an excellent bout of debugging, this fixes a problem with the captcha (antispam test) answers not being properly accepted when an anonymous or OpenID user tries to solve them.

Bug 1229: English-strip htdocs/admin/spamreports.bml
Category: English-Stripping
Patch by: [personal profile] randomling
Description: This removes the hard-coded text from the antispam admin pages and instead puts it into the site copy system, so that it can be changed on the fly if it needs to be.

Bug 4595: Add hyperlinks to Public Layers page
Category: Unknown
Patch by: [personal profile] kunzite
Description: My! The site is really full of links. This adds anchors to the Public Layers page so that when you open one of the leaves of the tree, you aren't bumped back up to the top of the page. It is also [personal profile] kunzite's ♥first patch♥ for us!

Bug 2886: Allow title attributes to links list entries
Category: Style System
Suggested by: [personal profile] matgb
Patch by: [personal profile] randomling
Description: More links! This patch adds the ability to enter a title (for hovering-over) to links on your links list. It is so ♥pretty♥ and ♥shiny♥.

Bug 4620: Convert personal journal to community page is very confusing
Category: Communities
Patch by: [personal profile] ninetyd
Description: Oh, what a sad and neglected page to turn a personal account into a community. Fortunately, [personal profile] ninetyd came along to fix it up for Us. This patch does all sorts of things to make the page better and more usable.

Bug 4630: 'Frozen' incorrectly identified as a link the comment interaction links
Category: S2 Backend
Patch by: [personal profile] momijizukamori
Description: This fixes a display issue in journal-styled entry and comment pages where the "Frozen" label on a comment that had been frozen was formatted like a link, even though it shouldn't be. Uncanny!

Bug 4628: ReplyPage gets the wrong view title on comment replies
Category: Style System
Patch by: [personal profile] momijizukamori
Description: ♥Titles♥ are so ♥useful♥. But not when they're wrong. This bug corrects the browser title that displays on journal-styled comment pages when you're replying to a comment so it shows the comment subject, not the parent entry subject.

Bug 4496: "Delete all" should not be option in inbox subfolders
Category: Inbox/Notifications
Suggested by: [personal profile] thnidu
Patch by: [personal profile] yvi
Description: Oh dear. The labels on action buttons in the inbox weren't clear when you were in a subfolder. "Delete all"? Does that mean all the notifications in the subfolder? All the notifications in the parent folder? All the notifications in the inbox? All the notifications in everyone's inbox across the cosmos? Fortunately [personal profile] yvi came along to make the confusion better. Now We will be able to delete with impunity and not risk leaving you to clean up Our mess again, little Prince.

Bug 4625: Add more labeling to core2
Category: Style System
Patch by: [personal profile] momijizukamori
Description: ♥Classes♥ are so ♥useful♥ too. This bug adds CSS classes around the comment header labels, such as from/date/IP address, on journal-skinned comment pages, to make it easier for designers to manipulate those pieces using CSS.

Bug 3821: browser title on ?mode=reply should have (no subject) when there's no subject
Category: Journal contents
Patch by: [personal profile] kaberett
Description: More ♥titles♥! Oh, it makes Our royal heart flutter. This patch corrects the browser title displayed on the comment reply page for entries that have no subject. [personal profile] kaberett did such a ♥clever♥ job in making it all work out.

Bug 4294: (jquery beta - cut tag) cut tags are no longer expanded on the page after using the back button
Category: Misc UI/Frontend
Patch by: [personal profile] dunvi
Description: Oh, how ♥smart♥. This fixes the "new Javascript on Journals" beta test so that cut tags are still expanded after you click the back button.

Bug 4606: Add reason for 'adult' warning on moderated entry pending approval
Category: Communities
Patch by: [personal profile] ninetyd
Description: Oooooh, how daring. How daring and dangerous. This makes it so that community moderators can see why a poster has marked an entry "adult" while the entry's still in the moderation queue. If they have marked it as "adult", that is. If they haven't marked it as "adult" We aren't going to make up a reason. That would require far too much work.

Bug 4245: Keywords are not listed separately for styling the icons page in S2
Category: S2 Backend
Suggested by: [personal profile] cmshaw
Patch by: [personal profile] fu
Description: How confusing. How frightfully confusing. The new journal-styled icons page that we're working on enabling for all the layouts had icon keywords listed in a strange, strange way. Now it is fixed ♥

Bug 3707: Allow more sites in embed whitelist
Category: Journal contents
Patch by: [personal profile] fu
Description: There are bad, bad people out there in the world. We like to protect you, Our loyal users, by preventing people from posting malicious coding and scripting in journal entries or in comments. Unfortunately this means that We must whitelist each individual site's widgets before they can be used in comments and entries, once We know they aren't going to hijack your browser and send it to Antarctica. This was the bug We were using to collect all the examples of widgets to whitelist, but We decided it was getting unwieldy; We closed this bug and will now be opening individual bugs for each new whitelist.

Bug 4518: allow embedding from 8tracks.com
Category: Configuration
Patch by: [personal profile] fu
Description: This adds 8tracks.com to the whitelist for widgets.

Bug 4588: enable embeds from google calendar
Category: Misc UI/Frontend
Patch by: [personal profile] fu
Description: This adds Google Calendar to the whitelist for widgets.

Bug 4468: Slash character not escaped in tag index links
Category: Tags
Patch by: [personal profile] fu
Description: If you use a slash in a tag, the link to view all entries with that tag is broken. (The same thing happens with certain other characters that shouldn't appear in URLs, or mean something different when they're in a URL.) Rather than try to escape the characters, we changed around the URLs a bit so if the system sees one of the characters that won't work in the URL, it will make the link differently. This won't change the links for other tags, only the ones that have characters that break in links.

Bug 4259: Make ?poster= work for OpenID accounts.
Category: Communities
Suggested by: [personal profile] phidari
Patch by: [personal profile] fu
Description: Right now -- yes, right this very instant -- you can add ?poster=username to the end of a community URL to see all posts made by "username" to that community. See, watch: http://dw-dev.dreamwidth.org/?poster=denise ♥ It's like magic ♥ This patch will extend it to OpenID identities, so you will also be able to add ?poster=username.livejournal.com (or whatever) to the URL to see all posts made by an OpenID account.

Bug 4329: Add screened comment count to S2 styles
Category: Style System
Patch by: [personal profile] momijizukamori
Description: Oh, how wonderful ♥ When you load an entry page in the site skin, it shows you how many screened comments are present on the entry, if you can see screened comments on that entry. That wasn't available on journal-styled comment pages, though. Now it will be ♥

Bug 4637: Keywords lacking padding in some styles
Category: Style System
Patch by: [personal profile] ninetyd
Description: While working to convert more layouts to having a styleable /icons page, we discovered some issues with padding around icon keywords. This fixes it ♥

Bug 4643: Add labels to the counter in Active Entries in core2
Category: Style System
Patch by: [personal profile] momijizukamori
Description: We like labels ♥ We like cleaning things up ♥ This bug adds a CSS class to the Active Entries module in journalspace so designers can target the numbering.

Bug 4602: Fix/enhance management/interaction links in entries and comments
Category: Style System
Patch by: [personal profile] kunzite
Description: So much cleanup ♥ This adds more CSS classes and fixes a case where styles could print invalid HTML in entry and comment interaction links.

Bug 1723: tag counts available for protected entry tags
Category: Tags
Patch by: [personal profile] swaldman
Description: This fixes an issue that's been bugging Us for a while. If a tag was used only on locked or private entries, it (and the number of times it's been used) wouldn't be displayed publicly, but if a tag had a mixture of uses on public and private entries, the tag would be displayed and the count would show the total number of uses, not the total number of uses visible to the viewer. (This was for performance reasons: the number of visible entries with that tag could be different for each person, due to custom security groups, and it could be a real hit to recalculate that all the time.) Fortunately, [personal profile] swaldman was able to come up with a way that shouldn't be too much of a performance problem: it may now underreport usage, rather than overreport -- that is, you may be able to see 20 entries tagged with the tag, but the number will only be "15" -- but We figured that would be preferable.

Bug 4639: Misc. styles: remove superfluous list-style; always use in UL
Category: Style System
Patch by: [personal profile] ninetyd
Description: Oh, styles ♥ Oh, CSS ♥ This cleans up some redundant CSS declarations to make them ♥cleaner♥ and ♥neater♥.

Bug 4590: the "save changes?" popup when navigating away from a settings page with unsaved changes is ambiguous
Category: Misc UI/Frontend
Patch by: [personal profile] swaldman
Description: Does "cancel" mean to throw away changes and leave the page, or cancel the request to leave the page so you can go back to save? This makes the warning you get when you try to leave a settings page without having saved your changes a little more explicit about which to hit.

Bug 4652: update URL for FF.net userhead
Category: Misc Backend
Patch by: [personal profile] ninetyd
Description: Silly other sites, moving their icons around. Don't they know that We rely on them being in the same place? This fixes the <user name=foo> tag for fanfiction.net.

Bug 4017: Use the form from the new Create Entries page for editing your own entries
Category: Journal contents
Patch by: [personal profile] fu
Description: Oh, how exciting ♥ We can hardly contain Ourselves ♥ We are ready to add the first version of editing entries to the beta update page. This will only work on editing your own entries -- community admins trying to override things on posts in their communities will still be directed to the old update/edit page -- but it's the next major step in getting the new update page out of beta. (Now We are only missing saving drafts and a rich text editor ♥)

Bug 4654: Let supporthelps get a dump of any user's icon data
Category: Icons
Patch by: [personal profile] fu
Description: This is an admin/debugging tool that will let trusted support volunteers peek in on the backend, machine-readable data feed that shows your icons, to save a few steps in troubleshooting. No more having to tell people to visit the page and copy and paste the machine-readable data!

Backend changes

Bug 4540: fix broken comment
Category: Misc Backend
Patch by: [staff profile] denise
Description: We are a very hardworking King. We simply can't be expected to keep up with every little change. Fortunately, Our loyal developer [personal profile] deborah noticed that a comment in the code gave incorrect information about what a particular backend function returned when called, and opened this bug so the comment could be updated to actually give proper information.

Bug 4549: LJ::Test depends on file from old TheSchwartz repo
Category: Testing
Patch by: [personal profile] kareila
Description: We are a very busy King. We simply can't be bothered tidying up after Ourselves when we move things around. Fortunately, Our loyal developer [personal profile] kareila noticed that one of the files in our automated test suite (which is severely out of date and We keep meaning to redo it, but there are only so many hours in Our day) was expecting a file to be in a particular place, and when We moved to Our new version control system, it broke.

Bug 4550: t/comment.t chokes on cached talkdata
Category: Testing
Patch by: [personal profile] kareila
Description: We are a very talkative King. We simply can't be expected to remember to tell the automated test suite the proper way to handle all Our cached comments. Fortunately, Our loyal developer [personal profile] kareila noticed the problem and was able to correct the test.

Bug 4431: Add ability to smart redirect to SSL version of page.
Category: Routing/TT
Patch by: [personal profile] exor674
Description: We are a very secure King. We simply can't be bothered telling Our templating system to pay attention to the fact that some pages should be redirected to the HTTPS version instead of the HTTP version. Fortunately, Our loyal developer [personal profile] exor674 was able to tell the routing system when to redirect to the HTTPS version.

Bug 4399: pngcrush pngs
Category: Unknown
Patch by: [personal profile] exor674
Description: We are a very expansive King. We simply can't be bothered trying to minimize the images on the site to remove embedded color profiles and strip them down to the smallest possible version. Fortunately, Our loyal developer [personal profile] exor674 was able to go through and crush all the image files. Boom! Squish!

Bug 4531: Separate concatenation for "library/site-scheme" and page-specific JS/CSS
Category: Misc UI/Frontend
Patch by: [personal profile] fu
Description: We are a very expressive King. We simply can't be bothered to properly sort out which JavaScript files should be lumped together before loading the page and which should be allowed to load separately. Fortunately, Our loyal developer [personal profile] fu was able to sort that all out for us and put them in the proper order.

Bug 4644: -nonfree implementations of DW::BusinessRules::* not being loaded
Category: Misc Backend
Patch by: [personal profile] fu
Description: We are a very organized King. We simply can't be bothered to keep track of where all of you people have moved things while Our back was turned. Fortunately, Our loyal developer [personal profile] fu was able to identify one file that wasn't properly being loaded after some bits of the code were moved to accomodate Our new version control system, and fixed it so it would be loaded properly.

Bug 4594: overlays + /customize/ can't find the .text strings
Category: Modernization
Patch by: [personal profile] fu
Description: We are a very verbose King. We simply can't be bothered to keep track of all the places Our pronouncements are stored. Fortunately, Our loyal developer [personal profile] fu was able to find some text strings that weren't loading properly after the switch to the new version control system.

Bug 4631: Notifications system and some commandline scripts stopped working with no-overlays
Category: Inbox/Notifications
Patch by: [personal profile] fu
Description: We are a very timely King. We simply can't be bothered to properly handle notifications of Our events. Fortunately, Our loyal developer [personal profile] fu was able to spot the problem and fix it so that the notification system, and several other backend utilities, worked properly under the new version control system.

Bug 4619: DW::Pay::add_paid_time does not convert paid to premium for day values
Category: Payments
Patch by: [personal profile] ryan
Description: We are a very generous king. We simply can't be bothered to do all that fiddly little calculation. Fortunately, Our loyal developer [personal profile] ryan was able to handle the little details for Us, and now it will be easier to convert paid time to premium paid time in the backend tools. We are also pleased to welcome ♥[personal profile] ryan♥ back after a long absence!

Bug 4623: jbackup.pl prone to infinite loops
Category: Misc Backend
Patch by: [personal profile] kareila
Description: We are a very loopy King. We simply can't be bothered to make sure Our backend journal-downloading script doesn't get stuck in infinite loops if large numbers of entries have the same timestamps or are missing a certain parameter on the entries. Fortunately, Our loyal developer [personal profile] kareila was able to move some things around in the script so there's less of a chance of the script erroring out.

Bug 4634: S2 Compiler and argumented constructors
Category: S2 Backend
Patch by: [personal profile] exor674
Description: We are a very stylish King. We simply can't be bothered to make sure the backend custom programming language that runs the style system is as efficient as possible when you're writing certain new functions in it. Fortunately, Our loyal developer [personal profile] exor674 was able to teach the compiler some easier ways of doing things.

Bug 4526: make sure regexps in DW::Controller modules are anchored
Category: Routing/TT
Patch by: [personal profile] fu
Description: We are a very regular King. We simply can't be bothered to check all our regular expressions to make sure they're as efficient as possible. Fortunately, Our loyal developer [personal profile] fu went through and checked all of them to fix them up for Us.

I know there's a PS3 version; I might have to track that down now that I've acquired one of those consoles.

I read this, thought it was amusing, went off to do something else, and about twenty minutes later realized just what song I was humming. Well played, and apology for the earworm accepted. :D

Thanks Denise, I really needed this after the crap-tastic 12 hour stretch of work today. (We put the 'disaster' into 'disaster recovery testing' today; just about everything that could go wrong did.)

This is the best code tour ever. I wish I could do code tours for my job like this. (Sadly since I am one of the youngest people in the office at 30, I suspect no one would get it...)

Also, I love bug 2886! It's something I've been wanting forever. And thank you, thank you, thank you for bug 4496! I've never dared to use the "Delete all" button just because of this. And bug 4017 is love!
